National Geographic is the district-adopted curriculum for 7th and 8th grade social studies. Using the Cengage platform, teachers can assign or link content from the curriculum and provide it digitally to students via their Canvas courses.

Canvas Integration Setup (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Open the Canvas course you'd like to set up with Cengage. Click on Modules and then the 3 dots. Select “Cengage LTI Advantage.”

Step 2: A window will appear that looks like what you see below. Click on “Select Program.”

Step 3: Search for one of these ISBN numbers. Click the circle so it turns blue, then scroll down and click on “Continue.”

  • 7th Grade U.S. Studies: 9798214360652
  • 8th Grade Geography: 9798214637136

Step 4: Click on “Create a new course from scratch.”

Step 5: Leave the course name as is. It should be the same as your Canvas course. Ensure the time zone is correct. Set the dates for the length of your Canvas course, which is typically a semester. Click on “Finish” when you are done.

Step 6: Once you see this message, click on “Add Course Link.”

Step 7: Clicking on “Add Course Link” will create a Module like what you see below. Click the 3 dots along the Module and “Edit” to rename the Module to something like “National Geographic Textbook.” This link should be published and you will want to instruct all students to click on it to activate their Cengage account.

Step 8: Once the course link has been added to your Modules, click on the 3 dots like in Step 1 and click on “Cengage LTI Advantage" again. This time, click on “Select Content.”

Step 9: Expand the units and chapters of the textbook. You can then check the boxes on the left if you want to create a link to the eTextbook, videos, or other digital resources. If it is an assignment that students can complete, there will be a checkbox on the right as well. Checking the boxes on the right will create a Canvas Assignment, which will display in the gradebook. Click on “Continue” to complete the importing process. Note: While assignments must be graded by the teacher in Cengage's platform, the score will sync over to Canvas automatically. These are “External Tool” assignments, which means you will need to mark them missing manually if they are missing/late.

Step 10: When you click on “Continue,” a new Module will be created with the items you selected to import. You can then rename the Module or slides items into another Module and delete this one.
