There are many different ways your teacher might ask you to submit an assignment in Canvas. Open one of your assignments and you will see some (or all) of the options below.

Watch the video or click on the tabs below to find directions for the type of submission your teacher is asking for.

Text Entry Submission

Click on the Text Box submission and you will be given a box to type in. Click on Submit Assignment when you are done. If you are asked to, you can copy/paste links or upload documents.

Web URL

Click on the Web URL button. Find the URL (or web address) that you need to turn in, copy it, and paste it into this box.

Usually this submission type is used for students to turn in a link to a Google Doc. If so, here’s how to complete that process.
Click on Share in your Google Doc.

In the blue box, type in your teacher’s email address.

Allow your teacher to be an “Editor,” uncheck the box to “Notify people,” and then click on the chainlink button to copy your link.

Go back to Canvas and click on the Web URL box. Paste (by pressing command and v on your keyboard or two-finger clicking on the box and selecting “Paste.” Click on “Submit Assignment.”

Media Recording

This submission type allows you to either record something with your webcam or upload a video or audio recording that you have on your computer.

Record Media:
Select Record Media if you need to record using your webcam and microphone.

Click on the camera and microphone icons to turn them on and then click on “Start Recording.”

Once you have completed the recording, you can watch it back and then click on “Save Media.”

Upload Media:
If you are uploading a video or audio recording, click on Upload Media. Click on the rocket ship and then select a file from your computer. Click on Upload.

Once uploaded, you should be able to watch your media back. Click on Upload when you are ready to submit.

File Upload

This is one of the most common ways that teachers will ask you to submit. If you are looking to upload something from Google Drive, do not use the Upload button. Instead, refer to the guide for “More.” Click on Upload and then click on the rocket ship.

Find the file that you want to upload. Click on “Open.”

Once you click on Open, it will upload your file. Once you see a green checkmark, the upload is complete. Click on “Submit Assignment” to turn it in.

Studio

Submitting with Studio is used when you need to either record your screen (such as a slideshow) and submit it to Canvas or upload a long video file that may fail when trying it as a File Upload. You can also submit a file on your computer already or even submit a YouTube video if requested.

Screen Capture: Click on Studio and then +Create. You can click on either Studio Capture to record your screen or Add Media.

Studio Capture will open and look like this. You can turn on your webcam, microphone, and also Screen Capture (to be used if you want to record a slideshow and submit, for example). Click on Start Recording.

Once your media is recorded, you can watch it, name it, and “Save Media” if you are ready to submit.

Add Media: This option can be used if you already have media to submit or if your teacher wants you to submit something from YouTube.

This button hides one of the most common ways students will submit. Click on More, then select one of the three options.

Canva for Education: If you have a Canva design you want to submit, this is the easiest way to do it.
Google Assignments: This is a very commonly used option. Click on Google Assignments and you’ll be able to upload from your Google Drive. You do not need to “share” documents with your teacher if you use this method to submit a Google Doc or Google Slideshow. Canvas will take care of that for you.
HMH Ed Linking Tool: This is used in some science classrooms. It is not used very often so this guide will skip that topic.

Canva for Education: If you have a Canva design, click on Canva for Education. Sign in with your Google Account to access your designs.

Find the design you want to submit and click on it.

You should see a preview of your design. Click on “Submit Assignment.”

Google Assignments: This is one of the most common ways that students will submit. Note that this is different from the other “Google Assignment” tab. This button simply allows you to upload a file from your Google Drive. Click on “Google Assignments.”

Make sure you are signed in with your @shakopeeschools.org Google Account. Then click on “Select file.”

Another window will pop up. Search your Drive and find the document you want to submit. Click on it and it should be outlined in blue. Then click “Add.”

Click on “Attach.”

You will then see the file upload. It is done uploading when you see a green check mark. Then click on “Submit Assignment.”

Google Assignments

If you open up an assignment in Canvas and it looks something like this, your teacher created a Google Assignment. This means you were automatically provided a file or template to use for this assignment. You can also go into your Google Drive and search for the assignment title or open your “Assignments” folder and the folders inside that to find your assignment.

*If this screen asks you to “Link” your Google Account, please do so. Remember to use your @shakopeeschools.org account. You should only need to do this once per Canvas course you are in.

Click on the name of your file under “Your files.” It should include your name and then the name of the file you are going to edit. Once you have completed your assignment, click on “Open to attach and submit.”

A new window will open. Click on “Add files” if you want to submit more than just the file your teacher provided to you. Click on “Submit” if you are done.

Click on “Submit.”

When you see a green checkmark, you have successfully submitted the file to your teacher.. You can resubmit in this window, add more files, or open your original file. Remember that you can look in your Google Drive to find this file as well and you do not need to share this file with your teacher. Sharing has been done automatically.
